There are more than 200 terpenes produced by the cannabis plant, including terpinolene. The terpinolene is really less common than other terpenes in its chemical class. Terpinolene is mainly found in the sativa type.
What kind of aroma does terpinolene have?
Despite the fact that terpinolene is a small component of the plant, it has something unique, namely the scent of different cannabis strains. That is why cannabis smells very strong.
The scent is reminiscent of the forest. You can also describe it as earthy, fresh and offers distinctive scents such as pines and flowers. As a result, it is often used with soap and perfume.
Where else is terpinolene found?
Terpinolene occurs naturally in various plant species. Some examples of this are nutmeg, scots pine, oregano, rosemary, sweet marjoram, basil and ginger.
Are there any effects?
As with almost all substances in the cannabis plant, there are interesting therapeutic effects, but they are far from finished the studies. Cell and animal studies have already been done that yielded an expectation, but no tests have been carried out on humans. The cell studies and animal studies have therefore made an outline of what terpinolene can do to humans.
So far it has the following effects:
• Anti-tumor effects
• Antioxidant effects
• Analgesic effects
• Anti-inflammatory effects
• Possible calming effects
• Possible protective effects against cardiovascular disease
The study shows the terpene is effective in reducing the expression of a protein kinase called AKT. AKT, also known as protein kinase B, contributes to cancer progression by regulating cell proliferation and survival signals.
Oxidation of LDL – caused by free radicals – can potentially cause hardening of the arteries. By counteracting this oxidation, terpinolene may help prevent the above conditions.
