Is ‘fat’ always unhealthy?

There are quite a few prejudices about what healthy food is. For example, it is known that fatty food is not good for you, but to what extent is this actually true? To get straight to the point: no, fatty foods are not necessarily unhealthy. Below is an explanation of how this works, and why fat is even an essential part of a healthy diet.

Where people quickly think of health problems with an excessive intake of fat, this also applies to a shortage of the right fats. If you exclude healthy fats from your diet, there is a greater chance that you will build up a vitamin deficiency and your hormone balance will be disrupted. In addition, you run a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, increased blood pressure and cholesterol levels and your immune system works less well.

It is therefore important to include enough healthy saturated and unsaturated fats in your diet. Saturated fats contain many healthy, saturated fatty acids that are necessary for our body. The body uses them as building blocks for fuel. Animal food is usually a good source of saturated fats, but not every animal product contains the desired healthy fats. This actually mainly depends on whether the livestock from which the product comes from lives under pleasant and ethical conditions. Cows prefer to graze freely in the meadow, for example. Animals that are not treated so well, on the other hand, produce the unhealthier saturated fats, for example if cattle are kept indoors too much and are fed processed food.

Like the saturated fats, unsaturated fats are also essential substances for our body. Healthy unsaturated fats are fatty acids that serve as important building blocks for fuel. Your body cells need these fats to continue to function properly. Unsaturated fats are found in all kinds of foods and nutrients. Vegetable oils, fatty fish, nuts, seeds and avocado are packed with these. These include Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, which make them essential fats, because the human body cannot produce these substances itself.
